A.'s Story

A. Carl Sandel, 86, of 113 Frosty Valley Road, Danville, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 17, 2016.
He was born Feb. 17, 1930, in West Hemlock Township, Montour County, a son of the late Augusta Sandel Yungkurth. On Oct. 22, 1955, he married the former Lorraine J. Flore. They celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Carl was a 1948 graduate of Danville Area High School, where his project for the FFA was Ayrshire cows.
He was a self-employed agricultural, crop and dairy farmer until his retirement in 1995. Carl also worked at Bobby George Farm for more than 50 years. He also sold rabbits and ducks throughout the five counties. During the mid-sixties he raised chickens and was in the egg business.
Carl served faithfully as a West Hemlock 4-H Leader for 25 years. He later enjoyed mentoring his grandchildren and Seth and Laura Thomas when they were involved in the 4-H Dairy Program. He was a member of the Central Eastern PA Coon Club for 44 years where he served as treasurer, a member of the American Association of Black and Tan Coonhounds and the PA Nite Hunter's Association. He served on the West Hemlock-Danville Area School Board for nine years and on the Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech School Board. Carl was one of the original board members of the Danville Area Community Center. He was a committee person for Montour County, constable for West Hemlock Township and president of the Montour County Farm Bureau. Carl showed cattle at the Bloomsburg Fair for 53 years and at the Montour-Delong Fair for 52 years. There is a livestock barn named after him at the Montour-Delong Fairgrounds where he also began mule jumping competition. He pulled ponies at many competitions which he also judged. He regularly attended the Keister's Livestock Auction in Middleburg. He was very well known for generously sharing delicious vegetables from the auction with his family and friends.
He was an avid hunter and sportsman. He particularly enjoyed coon hunting with his coonhounds and later with his four legged mule as well. He thoroughly enjoyed attending the Bloomsburg Fair and in 2009 he first missed attending after 73 years.
After his retirement in 1995, his greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Carl is survived by one son, Keith Eugene Sandel and his wife Ruth-Lee Evelyn Ricker Sandel; and four grandchildren, Jana Hollenbach and her husband Joseph, of Lewisburg, Eric Sandel, of Milton, Sarabeth Borowiec and her husband Jonathan, of Henrietta, N.Y., and Aaron Sandel and his wife Lina, of Lancaster; six great-grandchildren; two half brothers, Howard Yungkurth Jr. and Edward Yungkurth, both of Hazleton.
Friends will be received from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Friday at the Visneski Funeral Home Inc., 10 W. Mahoning St., Danville, followed by the funeral at 2 with the Rev. Dr. Harry H. Wonderland officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dawes J. Dunham.
Burial will follow in St. Paul's Straub's Lutheran Cemetery, Danville.
