Betty's Story

Betty M. Irving, 91, formerly of Riverside, passed away peacefully on Friday, Aug. 4, 2017, at Emmanuel Nursing Center, Danville.

She was born Sept. 10, 1925, in Beaver Township, Columbia County, the daughter of May Singley.

She graduated from Bloomsburg High School and Geisinger School of Nursing Class of 1946.

Betty was married for 47 years to the late Richard G. Irving who preceded her in death on March 3, 1994. They were married Jan. 18, 1947.

Betty was employed as an RN for Geisinger Medical Center for several years. She was also employed and volunteered with the American Red Cross in her later years.

She was a faithful and committed member of Mahoning Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder, Sunday School teacher, and was a member of the Women's Association there. She also helped with Bible School.

Betty enjoyed cooking, gardening, and playing Bridge. As an active member of the American Legion Band Auxiliary, she supported band activities and made several trips to Germany with the band. She also participated actively with the Geisinger Nurses Alumni Association and she met regularly with her classmates from Bloomsburg High School. She loved to travel and enjoyed listening to the American Legion Band and Sunbury Band. She often would follow her husband with many of his band performances which she loved to do. Betty was a dedicated wife and mother. Her passion in life was caring for others. Her family was her greatest joy, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she adored.

She is survived by one son, Richard Irving Jr., of Danville; and two daughters, Marilyn McAllister and her husband Steve, of Georgia and Nancy Whelan and her husband John, of Danville. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Matthew Jones, Laura Broshears and Sarah Whelan; as well as two great-grandchildren, Blake Jones and Enzo Broshears. She is also survived by one cousin, George Schell, of Selinsgrove.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one grandson, Stephen Jones.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Betty's life to be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017, at Mahoning Presbyterian Church, 218 Ferry St., Danville, with the Rev. Graham Rogers officiating. Friends will be received Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Visneski Funeral Home, Inc., 10 W. Mahoning St., Danville.

Burial will be private in the Fairview Cemetery, Danville.
