Catherine's Story

Catherine L. Wintersteen, 94, formerly of 2 Logan St., Danville, and of R.D. 2, Catawissa, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at Emmanuel Nursing Center, Danville, where she had resided since March.
She was born Dec. 29, 1922, in Riverside, a daughter of the late Charles J. and Emma C. Wintersteen Hower. She was married for 64 years to James A. Wintersteen who preceded her in death in 1994. They were married on Nov. 3, 1940.

She graduated from Danville High School with honors.
Catherine was a selfless, faithful and dedicated housewife. Her family was at the heart of all she did and gave her much delight throughout her lifetime.
She was a member of St. Peter's United Methodist Church, Riverside, where she participated in Bible studies, United Methodist Women, and faithfully served with serving meals, helping with Ice Cream Socials, and making donuts. Her other memberships included the Klinesgrove Methodist Church and Ladies of the Golden Eagles.
Catherine enjoyed cooking, birdwatching, and flower gardening. She had a deep passion for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and it was her joy to participate in the lives of them all. Many loving memories will be cherished by her family whom she adored.

She is survived by five sons, James M. Wintersteen and wife, Cheryl, of Sunbury, Douglas S. Wintersteen and wife, Carol, of Catawissa, Curtiss D. Wintersteen and wife, Kathy, of Bloomsburg, Eric G. Wintersteen and wife, Lisa, of Grimesland, N.C., and Rodger C. Wintersteen and his fiancé, Gina Bross, of Danville; one daughter, Emma Kay Shalongo, of Danville; 13 grandchildren, Annette, Beth Ann, Scottie, Jeffrey, Evette, Adam, Megan, Katie, Eric, Tierney, Shane, Siobhan and Michael; 10 great-grandchildren, Brett, Chelsea, Ian, Amanda, Ty, Noel, Fletcher, Mia, McKinley, and Tilly; and two great-great-grandchildren, Veron and Kaylee.
She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Christine Kay Wintersteen; and one brother, Charles Ira Hower.

Friends and family will be received from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's United Methodist Church, 240 Sunbury Road, Riverside, followed by the funeral at 11, with the Rev. Dr. Donald Hurley officiating.
Burial will follow in Klinesgrove United Methodist Church Cemetery, Klinesgrove.
The family will provide flowers. Memorial contributions in Catherine's memory may be made to Emmanuel Nursing Center Memorial Fund, 600 Schoolhouse Road, Danville, PA 17821.
