Eileen R. "Aunt Sunny" Barnes, 91, of Washingtonville, went to be with her Lord on Friday, Dec. 1, 2017, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
She was born Aug. 1, 1926, in Allentown, a daughter of the late Howard and Martha (Long) Richards. She was married for 34 years to her husband, Donald Nelson Barnes who preceded her in death June 22, 1984. They were married June 3, 1951.
Eileen graduated with a master of science in education from the State University of New York - College at New Paltz.
She was employed in her younger years at the Metropolitan Opera. She was then a teacher for 23 years in Islip, New York, before moving to Pennsylvania.
She attended Washingtonville Lutheran Church where she was well known for her smiles and her "sunny" disposition. Eileen was an active and faithful member of the Washingtonville Volunteer Fire Company where she served on the Ladies' Auxiliary and wherever volunteers were needed.
An avid reader, Eileen was the author of three books. She lenjoyed listening to opera and classical music. Her greatest joy in life was being with people, especially her "adopted" family, Gary and Sandra Bennett, of Washingtonville, and their children, Meghan and Jessica as well as their families.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Jean.
A celebration of Sunny's life will be announced in the Spring with the Rev. Melody Sell officiating.
