George's Story

Dr. George W. Leighow, VMD, died on July 1, 2016, at the age of 82. He was a lifetime resident of Danville, renown area veterinarian, and avid golfer.

He was the son of Dr. George M. and Anna (Wendel) Leighow, of Danville. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Kenneth Leighow. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary (Willison) Leighow of 17 years; and his two sons: LTC(R) John Kevin Leighow and George Christopher Leighow. He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Lauren, Audrey, Grant, Gavin, Nico, and Seery.

Dr. Leighow attended schools in both Danville and Bloomsburg, where he played both football and track. He attended Cornell University and graduated from University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School. He provided both large and small animal veterinary services throughout central Pennsylvania, to include the Bloomsburg State Fair, for more than 40 years.

He was very active in the community through service with the Danville School, Bank, Red Cross boards, and the Danville Community Foundation. He was also a diehard sports enthusiast for all sports emanating from Philadelphia, as well at Penn State football. He was one of the original members of Frosty Valley and Larry's Creek Fish and Game Club. He was also a member of the Williamsport Country Club and Elks Club.

A ceremony in celebration of Dr. Leighow's life will take place at the Frosty Valley Country Club on September 10, 2016.
