John Thomas Evans

March 18, 1950 - September 02, 2018

Gone but never forgotten is the most beloved John T. Evans who passed away Sunday, September 2, 2018 after a lionhearted effort battling multiple cancers and Parkinson's Disease.

John was born March 18, 1950 to Nancy and Thomas Evans. He was raised in Duncannon, Pennsylvania, and attended college and received an MBA at Penn State University. While pursuing his Master's degree, a wonderful 45 year-long relationship was officially consummated on March 31, 1973, when he married the love of his life, Louise. His daughter, Meghaan Elizabeth, born March 3, 1984, was truly the apple of his eye. Their love carried through to his last days as both Louise and Meghaan cared for John in their home of 24 years, in a most tender way.

As a young man, John was an athlete, playing football, basketball, and tennis. The athletic mindset and enjoyment of sports persisted through his life. He followed his favorite professional and collegiate sports teams (Go Penn State!), tried his hand at horseback riding, discovered boxing to counter the deleterious effects of the Parkinson's, and stayed active as an avid outdoorsman. He loved skiing, fly fishing, hiking, and experiencing the wonder and beauty of nature. He loved to travel--whether by trains, planes, or automobiles (or RVs!)--and he set foot on every continent but Antartica! Beyond caring for his wife and daughter, John's fondest life goal was to visit every park in the National Park system; sadly, this objective did not see completion, but Meghaan has adopted this goal as her own and plans to complete the journey John started as a way to connect with and honor her father.

John began his professional career at the Selinsgrove Center (PA), a rehabilitation hospital and treatment center, where he was recognized for compassion and support. John served in senior financial positions with Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center (CO), Geisinger Medical Center (PA), Suburban Hospital (MD) and finally, his most rewarding position, as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at NRUCFC (VA). Friend and fellow Officer Sheldon C. Peterson said of John's impact at NRUCFC, "I've worked with no finer colleague. He leaves behind an inspiring legacy and profound respect from those he touched."

In his final days, John received many visits from relatives, colleagues, and friends. Others sent personal messages of gratitude for the mentorship, friendship, and support that John gave during their careers or at difficult times in their lives.

John was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Evans. In addition to his wife and daughter, John is survived by his mother, Nancy, sister Sandy Wolpert and father-in-law Fred L. Lenig.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the following charities: The American Cancer Society, National Park Foundation, The Michael J. Fox Foundation, and WAMU.

I would like to first start off by saying, I’m so sorry for your lost. The lost of a loved one is so heart breaking and you may wonder will the suffering ever end? Well I’d like to leave you with this Text from the Bible. Revelation 21:4 “And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” I hope you find comfort in this. I will keep you guys in my prayers.

John was a friend and colleague at Geisinger. He was a true gentleman and an admirable person. Always fun to talk to and a personality with true warmth and humor. My condolences to his wife and daughter.
