John Norbert O'Rourke Jr., M.D., 81, of Riverside, passed away on Friday, May 12, 2017, at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville and entered into the presence of the Lord.
He was born May 9, 1936, in Wilkes-Barre, the fourth child of the late John N. Sr. and Rose (Kielty) O'Rourke.

John attended St. Mary's High School in Wilkes-Barre, graduated cum laude in 1960 from King's College with a bachelor of science degree and earned his M.D. from Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry in 1964.
He was an intern at Misericordia Hospital in Philadelphia and a resident at Geisinger Medical Center in Internal Medicine. He married his wife, Nancy (Kaiser) O'Rourke on November 25, 1967, shortly before they moved to Ft. Campbell in Kentucky, where John served as a major with the Army Hospital from 1968-1970. He went on to complete a fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at the Northwestern University School of Medicine, Clinical Training Div. in Chicago. He became board-certified Diplomate of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology. Beginning in 1972, he returned to Danville to work as an associate in Internal Medicine for 30 years. In retirement, he was a volunteer physician at A Community Clinic in Sunbury for 10 years.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Danville, where he served on the Parish Council, Board of Education for St. Joseph School, and was a religious education teacher. He was actively involved in the Scripture Study program and the Charismatic Prayer Group for more than 40 years. He served as a Scout leader for the Riverside Cub Scout Pack 33 from 1985-1988.
John was a model train enthusiast and was a member of the Train Collectors Association and Lionel Operating Train Society. He built a train layout that his nephews traveled from California to visit and enjoy with him.

In addition to his loving wife, Nancy, he is survived by three children, Joseph M. O'Rourke, of Lewisburg, Matthew R. O'Rourke and wife Kristin, of Riverside, and Anne T. O'Rourke, of Riverside; four granddaughters, Alana, Kara, Molly, and Lily; 26 nieces and nephews; five siblings, Daniel C. O'Rourke and wife Marie, Rosanne Byrne, Maureen Holmes, Ellen Kennedy and husband Daniel, Sr. Therese O'Rourke, I.H.M.; a brother-in-law, Marshall Kaiser and wife Kathy; and a sister-in-law, Jane Corcoran and husband Terry.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church, 18 E. Center St., Danville, with his pastor, the Rev. James M. Lease as celebrant. The Rev. Francis Karwacki, pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church will concelebrate Mass. Friends will be received from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in St. Hubert's Chapel, located in the annex of St. Joseph Church, and again from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, with a presentation of Military Funeral Honors by American Legion Post 40.

The family will provide flowers. Memorial contributions in John's memory may be made to the Good Samaritan Mission, Box 114, Danville, PA 17821, the Friends of the Poor, 2300 Adams Ave., Scranton, PA 18509, or a charity of the donor's choice.
