Robert F. "Bob" Shaffer, 82, of 28 Pepper Hills, Danville, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, June 30, 2016, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
He was born June 30, 1934, in Berwick, a son of the late Leroy and Sarah (Smith) Shaffer. He was married for 54 years to Muriel M. (Long) Shaffer, who survives. They were married Jan. 12, 1962.
Bob graduated from Berwick High School in 1952.
He served his country in the Navy as a Master of Arms on the USS Amphibion (AR-13) during the Korean War.
Bob was owner and operator, along with his wife, of Shaffer's Stop Inn in Danville for 28 years.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Danville, where he actively served in the ARMS (Active Retired Men in Service). He was a lifetime member and a past Post Commander of the Danville VFW Post 298 and was also a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 40. His other memberships included Danville Elks, Washies Fire Company, Continental Fire Company and was a long time member of the Danville Moose. He was also a member of the Danville Boat Club and the Danville Senior Center.
Bob was one of the founding fathers of the Danville Shuffleboard League which has been in existence for 42 years. Along with shuffleboard, he loved doing jigsaw puzzles, hunting, fishing and he enjoyed birds. He also loved to do vegetable gardening. Bob's greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with his family, whom he adored.
In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by two sons, Clayton A. Shaffer and his wife Julie, of Denver Colo., and Duane L. Shaffer and his wife Cathy, of Danville; and two daughters, Debbie Bennett and her husband Richard, of Berwick, and Shari E. Johnson and her husband James, of Bloomsburg. He is also survived by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Dorothy Kalanick, of Alabama.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Leroy Shaffer, and one sister, Barbara Gensil.
A celebration of Bob's life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 7, 2016, at the First Baptist Church, 20 Brookside Drive, Danville (off 642 east) with the Rev. Dawes J. Dunham officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Harry H. Wonderland.
Burial will be held at 1:45 p.m. in Elan Memorial Park, Bloomsburg, with military rites accorded by the Danville American Legion Post 40 Honor Guard.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Visneski Funeral Home Inc., 10 W. Mahoning St., Danville.
