William's Story

Text size

William J. Kimber, M.D., 86, of Danville, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2018, at Nottingham Village, Northumberland.
Bill was born in Glen Ridge, N,J., the son of William Francis and Jean Hogg Kimber.

After obtaining his bachelor's degree from Cornell University, Bill earned his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania. He did his residency in cardiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and came to Geisinger Medical Center in 1968. He retired in 2011 as a cardiologist and medical director of the School of Cardiovascular Technology. As a physician, Bill's focus was always on compassionate, patient-centered care. In his role as a teacher and mentor, Bill was respected for his objective, open-minded guidance and thoughtful leadership; he was a true nurturer of the next generation of cardiac professionals.

His family is grateful for the outpouring of support and kindness from the medical community, including his colleagues, former students and patients, during his courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Bill was an adventuresome spirit and believed in living life to the fullest. He was a true gentleman, who had a way of making everyone feel that they are important and belong.

Bill instilled in his family the responsibilities of all to community service. He was a longtime volunteer with the American Heart Association. He was also active in the Danville Red Cross, and many Danville High School students have him to thank for their CPR training.

Bill enjoyed a rousing game of tennis, a green fairway, and fresh powder on a ski slope. Food was another passion, with a steak and an ice cold beer leading the list of many favorites, along with crème brulee for dessert, and stimulating conversation to top it off. He was a voracious reader, especially of history and newspapers, and was a proud American who appreciated the beauty of this country, especially the mountains and woods, and our National Parks.

Bill is survived by his wife, Ann. Also surviving are his first wife, Patricia Kimber, and their children, Katherine (Jon) Gabry, of Kearny, N.J.; James (Pamela) Kimber, of York, David Kimber and John (Christina) Kimber, of Danville, as well as eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His brother, Robert Kimber, of Temple, Maine, also survives, and his nephew, Greg Kimber.

The family is grateful to his caregivers at Nottingham Village and his companions at Home Instead Senior Care for their dedication, kindness and compassionate care.

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association (donatenow.heart.org), the Central Pennsylvania Division of the American Red Cross, 1804 N. Sixth St., Harrisburg, PA 17102, or the DeafBlind Community Access Network of New Jersey Inc., 187 Stewart Ave., Kearny, NJ 07032.
