Gerald's Story

Gerald C. Buckley, 90, of Danville, passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
He was born April 16, 1927, in Kirkmansville, Ky., the son of the late Coleman and Florine (Savage) Buckley. He was married for 42 years to the late Mary Ruth Buckley who preceded him in death in 1989. They were married in 1947.

Gerald was a 1945 graduate of Danville Area High School.
He was employed as a chemical operator at Merck and Company for 37 years where he was instrumental in beginning the first union at that site in the early 1950s. He was employed at Merck until his retirement in 1987.
He was a member of the Mahoning Presbyterian Church, Danville, the Danville Elks, a lifetime member of the Danville Moose and the Washies Fire and Hose Company. He celebrated 50 years of membership with the Danville Mahoning Lodge 224, where he was awarded the honor of Master Mason in 2012.
Gerald's greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with his family. He was passionate about travel and one of his favorite memories was his trip to Europe with Mary Ruth and good friends in 1970. He loved hunting and was proud of achieving the Triple Trophy in the 1960s for killing a bear, deer, and turkey in one year. He also enjoyed fishing, farming and playing cards. In his later years, he loved taking rides with his granddaughters to eat buckwheat cakes, pizza, or a Buckley burger at the family farm.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Ann L. and Peter Calinski, of East Amherst, N.Y.; one son and daughter-in-law, Gerald R. and Susan Buckley, of Danville; six grandchildren, Joseph, Karen, Daniel, Diane, Christine and Katie; one great-granddaughter, AnaLu; two brothers, George and Duane Buckley; one sister, Gloria Schaeffer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Marvin Buckley; and one sister, Elizabeth Buckley.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Visneski Funeral Home Inc., 10 W. Mahoning St., Danville, with the Rev. Graham Rogers officiating. Friends will be received from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.
Burial will be held in Straub's Lutheran Cemetery, Danville.
The family will provide flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Montour County Historical Society, 1 Bloom Road, Danville, PA 17821, or the American Cancer Society.
