Therese's Story

Text size

Sister Therese (of the Infant Jesus) Dugre, 100, a Discalced Carmelite nun, passed to God peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2016, at Emmanuel Center, Danville.
Sister Therese was born Marie Therese Yvette Dugre on June 10, 1916, in St. Boniface, Province of Quebec, Canada, eighth child of Ludger and Louisa (Bourassa) Dugre.
She attended a French school in her early years and excelled in her studies. Emigrating to the United States with her family in 1928, she continued her schooling in Manchester, N.H.

In 1932, at the age of 16, she entered the Discalced Carmelite Monastery in Loretto, and made profession on May 21, 1934. Nine years later she was chosen to be one of the foundresses of the monastery in Mount Carmel which was opened in 1953. In 1961, the Community moved to their newly-built monastery in Elysburg.
In religious life she served in many capacities. She was a superb baker, director of novices, sacristan for more than 20 years, making vestments and altar linens, seamstress, making liturgical banners, council sister and prioress.
Sister Therese was a witness to love of God, fidelity in prayer, diligent service to the Community, obedience and had a spontaneous enjoyable humor. Like her patron, St. Therese of Lisieux, Sister Therese was humble and transparent.

She is survived by two nephews, Raoul (Gladys) Dugre and Robert (Elizabeth) Dugre; and many nephews, nieces, grand-nephews and grand-nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents and all her siblings, Jean Marie, Marie Jeanne, Sr. Bernadette, O.C.D, Philippe, Germain, Rev. Maurice, Raymond and Sister Marie, O.C.D. (Georgette).

Rosary will be prayed in Maria Hall Chapel at 11 a.m. Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will celebrated at 1:30 p.m.
Following Sister Therese's desire, memorial contributions may be sent to Catholic Relief Services, 228 West Lexington St., Baltimore, MD 21201-3443 for Catholic missions in Honduras.
