Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania - Anna Jean Ward, 100 years young, passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at Sunset Ridge Nursing Center with her family by her side.


She was born March 20, 1922, in Danville, a daughter of the late James and Viola (Anderson) Burns.


Anna graduated from Danville Area School. After her graduation, she served in the Army Air Corp during World War II, driving Generals to free up more than 100,000 GI's to fight in the war. After her honorable discharge, she worked as an aide at the Danville State Hospital for many years. She was a member of the Eagles, Elks, VFW and American Legion, where she was secretary. Anna was the most senior female veteran in the area. She was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Church. Anna was an avid reader, loved solving jigsaw puzzles, crossword and word find, which she continued until the end.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, William J. "Bump" Ward in 1998, with whom she traveled throughout the country. After their retirement, they moved to Vero Beach, which they loved for over 20 years. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Edward Burns.


Anna is survived by her two sons, Jerry and his wife Carol Ward of Danville and Joseph Ward of Danville; three daughters, Patricia and her husband Mike Winehofer of Bloomsburg, Janine and her husband Todd Reibsome of Danville, Marie and her husband Steve Strausser of Danville; 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, at St. Joseph Church, 68 Center St., Danville, PA 17821 with her pastor, the Rev. Timothy Marcoe celebrating Mass. A visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the Brady Funeral Home, 448 Church St., Danville.


Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, where full military honors will be accorded.
