It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of David Zehner Richards Sr., a beloved father, brother, uncle, and friend, who passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born Oct. 13, 1935, in Palmerton, Pa. to Thomas and Georgine (Zehner) Richards, David lived a life of unwavering dedication to those he loved.
A proud graduate of the Selinsgrove High School Class of 1953, David went on to earn his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Penn State University, an accomplishment that marked the beginning of a remarkable career. His professional journey led him to serve as Vice President of Engineering and Sales at Kennedy Van Saun Corporation in Danville, Pa., where he and his loyal team built mineral processing equipment that allowed him to travel all over the world.
On Sept. 4, 1959, David married the love of his life, Maryann Apple. Their 65-year partnership was a testament to enduring love and devotion, spanning decades filled with cherished memories. Together, they built a family grounded in faith, kindness, and an unbreakable bond. Maryann remained by his side through all life's triumphs and challenges, lovingly caring for him until his final moments.
David was a very active member of his community. He was a member at Christ Memorial Episcopal Church in Danville where he served as a vestry member, treasurer and cemetery caretaker. David was an avid golfer and member of Frosty Valley Country Club. He served on the board of the Good Samaritan and volunteered on the Danville Revitalization Committee. He was a lifelong member of the Danville/Masonic Lodge No. 224 F&AM.
David was the consummate handyman. He was always building or organizing things at his home in Riverside, their family cabin at Black Moshannon or doing projects for his siblings. Those that knew him remember an immaculate lawn and his organized garage and office. Dave and his wife were avid Penn State fans. The Richards tailgate was host to hundreds for nearly 40 years, a tradition carried on by his family to this day.
He will be remembered as a man of quiet strength and steadfast dedication, who worked tirelessly to provide for his family. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life and was a guiding light to those fortunate enough to know him.
David Zehner Richards Sr. lived a life defined by love, faith, and service to others. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. His legacy of love, integrity, and selflessness will live on in the hearts of his family for generations to come. You are loved beyond measure. Rest in peace, David.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, who were the pride and joy of his life: a son, David Z. Richards Jr. and his wife Lorrie of State College; daughter, Kelly Grozier of Lakeland, Fla.; daughter, Allison Pensyl and her husband Drew of Danville; and son, Robert Richards of Danville; and two sisters, Georgine Patt and Geraldine Marks. He was a devoted grandfather to 10 grandchildren and a doting great-grandfather to 15 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, each of whom brought light and joy to his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Frank Richards and Thomas Richards, as well as his beloved in-laws, Robert and Veronica Apple.
