Suzann Morton Pharr recently passed after a protracted illness. She will be greatly missed.
Hailing from humble beginnings in Slab Fork, W.Va., a coal mining company town, Suzann was the daughter of Frank and Margaret Morton. She developed a love of books and music, singing with the W.Va. state school choir. She bettered herself through education, attending Queen's College in Charlotte, NC, receiving an English degree and then teaching elementary school in Northport, NY.
She met her future husband, William Frederick Pharr, MD, in W.Va. and they continued their courtship in NC as he attended nearby Davidson College. Soon they married and eventually settled in 1965 in Danville, Pa. Although they left for a time, fulfilling both her husband's training and service obligations, they returned for good in 1975 to their adopted hometown.
Suzann had three boys, Thorr, of Danville, Tarkten, of Elizabeth City, NC, and Nathan, of Malvern, Pa. Her husband Fred predeceased her in 2018, but she is survived by her sons, three grandsons, Alex, Cameron, and Trevor; and her wonderful younger sister, Nancy Scott, of West Columbia, SC.
In addition to her family, she loved her community and church, Grove Presbyterian, volunteering countless hours to both. She tutored English as a second language and worked as well for years at Friends in Mind bookstore, Bloomsburg, sharing her love of books with all.
A gardener at heart, Suzann spent many hours tending her plants and flower beds, enjoying the birds, butterflies, and bees they attracted.
Generosity of both her time and talents was her hallmark, wanting to contribute to good things being done, and determinedly spreading any credit assigned. Truly the task well done was its own reward.
Suzann's wish was to have a private family service.
Any gifts in remembrance should be directed to the Thomas Beaver Public Library or the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.
Arrangements are under the direction of Visneski Funeral Home, Inc. www.visneski.com
