Thomas Edward Herman, 91, of Danville, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Jan. 9, 2024, at his home. He was born April 4, 1932, in Danville, the son of the late Morgan James and Margaret (Kashner) Herman.

Tom graduated from Danville High School in 1951.

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict as a Chief Marine Engineer from 1951-1955.

Tom was married to Thelma (Mader) Herman for 32 years and was later married to Lois (Wert) Herman who preceded him in death in 2021.

A hard-working, self-employed dairy farmer, he was the owner/operator of Frosty Valley Dairy Jug Milk during the 1960s and 1970s. In his younger years, he worked at TRW in Danville.

He served as Montour County Commissioner from 1972-1988. He was then appointed as Regional Director of the Department of Agriculture and then returned to serving as Montour County Commissioner from 1996-2004.

A respected and committed community leader, Tom was well known for his work on various committees including the Geisinger Authority, Area Agency of Aging and SEDA COG, among many.

An avid outdoorsman, Tom enjoyed fishing, boating, and hunting. During his later years, he enjoyed spending time with his dogs, who were his constant companions. He loved spending time with his family, all of whom he adored.

Beyond his work, Tom was known for his generous, warm and compassionate nature always looking out for the underdog. He would go out of his way to help friends and neighbors, often lending a helping hand without seeking recognition or reward. Tom's acts of kindness and generosity touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible impact on the community he loved so dearly.

Tom's memory will be forever treasured by his family, neighbors, and friends, who will remember him for his kind heart, unwavering loyalty, and contagious smile.

He is survived by two sons, Edward L. Herman and his wife Margaret and Jeffrey Herman; and four daughters, Karen Robbins and her husband Dean, Cindy Cavanaugh, Julie Sees and her husband Steven and Kim McGaw and her husband Pat, all of Danville. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Gene Cavanaugh in 2010. The last surviving member of his immediate family, he was preceded in death by eight siblings.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank his son and their brother Jeff, for his devotion and care that was given to their dad throughout the past year and a half.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a walk-through celebration to be held Sunday, Jan. 14, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Visneski Funeral Home, Inc., 42 W. Mahoning St., Danville. Services will be private.

Burial will also be private in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Danville with military rites accorded by Danville American Legion Post 40 Honor Guard and the United States Navy Honor Guard.

The family will provide flowers.
